FIVA to help ECOSOC shape global transport debate

ECOSOC, one of ‘the six main organs’ of the United Nations, has granted consultative status to FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles) in a major step forward for the historic vehicle community.

The Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) is focused on generating international debate on sustainable development. By granting consultative status, it has empowered FIVA and its worldwide network of owners, drivers and enthusiasts to have global influence on the future of historic vehicles.

Comments FIVA president Tiddo Bresters, “This is great news for enthusiasts around the world. Behind the scenes, FIVA works ceaselessly to ensure that policymakers understand the cultural value of historic vehicles, which are all too easily overlooked as the world embraces a greener future. Now that the United Nations has acknowledged the international importance of historic vehicles in this way, our voice will be that much louder.

We owe it to future generations to ensure that historic cars, motorcycles and utilitarian vehicles – such an important part of human history, and a joy to see in action – will still be driven on public roads, alongside the very welcome forms of more sustainable transport.

We at FIVA will be enthusiastically participating in ECOSOC discussions on such topics as pollution, energy, and autonomous and connected vehicles, to represent the interests of the historic vehicle enthusiasts. We need to ensure that regulators appreciate the cultural contribution of historic vehicles, and the very specific needs of their owners, drivers and the community that flourishes around them.”
